Amid the slashing of tens of thousands of jobs to shrink its workforce, General Motors Corp. is now hanging out by its gates a ‘Help Wanted’ sign. The largest automaker around the globe intends to hire 400 people for highly specialized engineering and technical positions. The move is aimed at improving fuel economy of their vehicles and at the same time creating energy alternatives to oil.

On May 5, the automaker will hold an invitation-only job fair with the intention of filling up to 400 new engineering and technical positions in different fields including powertrain engineering, product development and fuel cells. GM also is looking to fill openings in its OnStar and information technology divisions.

GM intends make the event public during next week’s Society of Automotive Engineers conference in Detroit. Prospective candidates must register for the fair and submit a resume online. There is no stepping on the EBC pads for the automaker is set for a big haul.

The competition among applicants is quite intense. This is because the jobs needed belong to the growing fields that require highly specialized skills. “We’re looking for people with the technical expertise to help us change the way the world drives,” said Troy Clarke, the GM North America president, in a released statement.

GM is looking for a handful of highly-skilled employees to help develop the battery technology to drive a vehicle such as the Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid car which is equipped with an electric drivetrain and an internal combustion engine that recharges the vehicle’s batteries while on the road. The Volt is expected to go on sale by 2010 if GM can develop the battery technology required to operate it.

Other jobs would go to workers with expertise in a broad range of areas such as hybrid vehicles, hydrogen fuel cells, and diesel engines. While GM’s new jobs do not come close to restoring the 218,000 manufacturing jobs Michigan has lost since the year 2000, the additions are well received in a state whose unemployment rate has soared well above the national average for over five years.

“It’s that one step forward after the one-and-a-half steps backwards,” said Scott Watkins, a consultant with the Anderson Economic Group which is based in East Lansing. The new jobs are welcome, “but when you put it next to the jobs that have been cut, it’s a small drop in the bucket.”

Amid the thespian downsizing of the American automotive industry, Michigan has pinned its future on growing jobs in high technology fields like the advanced manufacturing and information technology.

The state has seen a steady decline in advanced automotive jobs like the ones GM looks to fill. The state had 127,800 of those jobs in 2004, down from 163,485 in 1998, according to data compiled by Automation Alley, a technology consortium based in Oakland County.

The jobs that remain in the field, however, are becoming increasingly lucrative, according to the data. Workers with an advanced automotive job earned an average salary of $62,500 in 2004, up from $53,500 in 1998. “The lower-wage, less-skilled jobs are the ones leaving,” Watkins said. “The more advanced ones that really involve the future of the industry and developing new products are the ones staying.”

In the previous years, GM has added about 1,000 employees a year in some of the most technologically advanced positions, said Brenda Rios, a GM spokeswoman. “We’re trying to tap the best people we can,” Rios said. “This is an expanding area.”

The automotive industry is operating in an acute transition mode, thanks to the economic, technological, political,.etc influences. And while car manufacturers administer their own tweaks to their products, OEM’s and auto part manufacturers would have to deal with their own set of challenges to adapt.

Several, emerging trends in the automotive engineering are evident as highlighted at PR Web.

1. Turbocharging will be popular again:

As a consequence of skyrocketing fuel prices smaller engines that generate more power would need to be built. Turbocharging already prevails in Europe, it would be in the US too by as early as 2010.

2. Internal combustion engine will evolve.

While the internal combustion engine stays, it will take on newer avatars owing to alternative fuel technologies used to drive the engines. For instance, plug-in vehicles, battery- powered cars and fuel cells powered automobiles. At the same time requiring, that the engines are ever more efficient.

3. Emergence of Biofuels

Biofeuls are likely to become popular in many parts of the world. For OEMs this means that they must rely on fail-safe materials due to a lack of standards for biodiesel. In Brazil use of biofuels has already achieved independence from petroleum fuel sources.

4. Consolidation of automotive fluids within assembly plants

Systems and processes for assembly plants meant to achieve less complex inventory management of fluids would be needed. And that this trend has already led to consolidation efforts that rely on multiple-use fluids.

5. Continuing vehicle electrification

Today as a result of advancements in electronics, most advanced electronic items can be added within the confines of 14-volt electrical systems. Consequently, most automobiles can be steered or braked electronically without voltage architecture beyond 14 volts. More systems will come under the electrical system’s reach.

6. The need to manufacture environment friendly refrigerants

A 2011 EU standard aims to eliminate the use of R-134a, the A/C system refrigerant currently used worldwide. The OEMs as a result need to devise ways to become compliant.

7. Emergence of Round-the-Globe Engineering

Major OEMs are setting up development centers around the globe. While Asian OEMs prefer satellite centers that take principal direction from a larger parent center, the North American model seems to allow these centers a given specific platform (and powertrain) development responsibility. And this necessitates local sourcing as well as local engineering and materials decision-making.

For the legendary Lamborghini sports car stable of fantastic ultra high performance and styled vehicles it all started with ordinary Fiat automobiles and tractors.

Mr. Lamborghini – fully named – Mr. Ferruccio Lamborghini got his start with Fiats and then went on to a large successful manufacturing concern that grew from a small manufacturing shop into a major producer of tractors. However at a certain point in every person’s life they search out to complete what their real passion is. In the case of Lamborghini was finely styled and crafted motor cars. At 60 years of age, an established manufacturer of agricultural tractors – Mr. Lamborghini – decided that he could a better job of building a high end, beautifully styled, performance racing automobiles than either of the two dominant Italian auto firms of that auto industry sector – Ferrari and Maserati.

The first product out of the door had a chassis that was multi-tubular; the engine was front mounted sporting a 3.5 liter 12 cylinder V-12 engine. The V-12 engine itself was fitted with six Weber carburetors and ran four overhead camshafts. It all clocked at 360 ultra smooth horsepower with the transmission drive being through five speed stick shift. Suspension involved a coil and wishbone independent suspension set up. In one word it was wow – both in terms of performance of the hop as well as the automotive styling.

Although the styling of those early Lamborghini models may be considered standard Italian sports car design – designs which have worked their way into the so called standard “sport scar designs “and “sport scar flair”, at the time it was new and innovative and for the most part if was twenty five years ahead of anything produced in the good old U.S.A. . The one American sports car which might be considered an exception to that point was the Chevrolet Corvette. For years to come nothing else really matched or was similar to the clean aerodynamic lines and styling of the early Lamborghini classic autos.

Even then Lamborghini had such innovative products the establishment and reputation of the Lamborghini product line was no easy road to hoe. Although the first cars were produced in 1963 it was not for two years later – at the Turin Motor Show that the car began to attract solid interest and for the reputation of the car and its studio to grow and begin to become accepted for what it should be.

The first real product of record for Lamborghini was what was marketed as Miura T 400 model automobile. Its first year of manufacture was the 1966 model year. The basic layout and design of the Miura T 400 was a mid-engined coupe with a slightly larger version of the overhead cam engine – the classic V-12 laid out transversely behind the two seats of the car. The rear wheels were then driven by this engine through” spurs gears”. Interestingly the gear boxes and rear axles were Lamborghini products all by themselves -so they shared a lineage that was unique and not the same as any other of the competitor’s models.

What was performance of this little cat? The V-12 engine could pour out a total of 385 barrel horsepower. Top speed of this little coupe was over 180 miles per hour. It could more than carry its weight with the local Italian contenders – even the famed Ferraris.

If the was one complaint from drivers or riders it was of noise levels in the car’s cockpit. It can be said that this was the price to be paid for success or in this case speed and performance. If you cannot stand the heat don’t stay in the kitchen. Certainly the buyers of Lamborghini fine motor cars who bought the product and established the revered name for its performance and advanced styling and forgo this small shortcoming or foible as the car as an assumed fact – even a luxury.

The next model in the Lamborghini stable was introduced approximately two years later. The entire life of the production run of the popular Miura model was nine years – with two cars being produced a week ( a production figure of only 100 or so cars a year). The name of this vehicle was the Espada. For the new Lamborghini model, the Espada, Lamborghini went back to a more standard front engine layout. Perhaps this was in response to concerns over noise levels in the cockpit of the Miura and the need to produce a more “standard” or “civilized “vehicle product. No one really knows what went on in the mind of the genius Ferruccio Lamborghini. However what was retained for sure were the Lamborghini basics – the four liter V-12 massive highly tuned engine with whizzy overhead cams and multiple choke carburetors all putting out massive automotive performance and handling.

In the end it can be said that the Lamborghini automotive and automotive styling and performance legends are more than unique and reek of power, thrust and acceleration.

FriCSo, Inc., a provider of patented, environmentally friendly nanolayer-based technology for friction reduction between moving parts, announced the success of its efforts which were aimed at improving automotive engines.

Earlier, a test was conducted by the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and it was found that FriCSo’s Surface Engineering Treatment (SET) was involving FriCSo’s product lines. According to the results, FriCSo’s technology reduces particulate matter emissions, increases engine mechanical efficiency, and reduces fuel consumption.

“This test is further proof that FriCSo’s SET introduces a new era in energy efficiency and environmental protection,” said Amir Weisberg, the CEO of FriCSo, Inc. “FriCSo is setting a new standard for friction and wear reduction, and enables manufacturers to offer superior products to meet market demand, with unprecedented performance.”

FriCSo’s breakthrough SET technology reduces the friction between moving parts through a ground-breaking polymer-based machining process. SET creates an oil-retaining organic nanolayer that is chemically bonded to the metal surface. As a result, it increases surface hardness and enhances surface topography. The technology is expected to bolster the efficiency of auto parts like the brakes and, at the same time, the overall performance and functionality of the vehicle.

Technion’s Mechanical Engineering Faculty performed the tests on a 4-cylinder tractor diesel engine at its Internal Combustion Engine Laboratory. The test consisted of two runs. The first test served as the baseline. It is done without any treatment of surfaces. The second test was consequently made after replacing the engine’s main friction parts like the cylinder liners, rocker shafts, piston pins, and valves with new parts treated with FriCSo’s SET.

Technion’s test results show that using the SET treatment leads to a fuel consumption reduction of 0.4 to four percent, depending on engine RPM and load. Additionally, SET treatment resulted in a significant cut of particulate matter emissions, about 43 to 46 percent, while oil consumption was reduced by 48 percent compared with the baseline case. In addition, SET treatment led to an improvement of about two percent in the engine’s mechanical efficiency.

According to S. Sumithra, a Frost & Sullivan research analyst, “FriCSo’s solution is an innovative device, which could potentially replace existing non-environment friendly coatings in the field of automotive coatings.”

FriCSo’s surface treatment delivers coating-like performance. SET comprises one or two of the following processes: high performance polymer lapping as a single treatment, and two-step treatment involving surface texturing using vibro-grooving followed by polymer lapping. “FriCSo’s solution is an innovative device, which could potentially replace existing non-environment friendly coatings in the field of automotive coatings,” said Sumithra.

Amir Weisberg, the CEO of FriCSo, Inc., said, “FriCSo’s solution is not a coating but delivers coating-like performance at a fraction of the time, cost and maintenance required by traditional solutions. Metal parts treated with SET enjoy high wear resistance and improved energy efficiency in the engines. SET is cost effective compared to using exotic metals for metal-pairs design, DLC and other coatings and bushings, and even offers superior performance in certain applications. Being environment friendly, this technology does not produce any toxic waste and complies with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) restrictions.”

While there are no water-powered cars on the market, scientists are working hard at finding a way to cheaply mass produce these vehicles. These cars would be a great way to clean up our environment as they have no harmful emissions.

Advantages:

If water cars could be developed and used by everyone then we would have no need for gas stations, oil refineries and tankers. There would be no more need for drilling for oil. The corner gas station would be a distant memory. In addition, the Ozone layer would return to pre-industrial conditions without any holes and the smog would disappear. Our environment would be much cleaner.

Water cars are cheaper. Water costs a lot less than gasoline. And it is very easy to get water to fill up your car.

Water cars are much better for the environment as they produce no emissions. Therefore they will not contribute to global warming.

Water is always being produced. It is very unlikely the earth will ever run out of water. And using a water-powered car it might help the environment. Water cars, using a process called electrolysis, send oxygen into the atmosphere. The oxygen can bind with hydrogen in the atmosphere to product water in the form of rain and snow.

Disadvantages

Water cars, if they came on the market, would be very expensive as they cost a lot to produce. However, there are developers working to make a cheaper car.

The water cars that are being developed today still use what is called brown gas and it is mixed with water using a method called electrolysis to produce power for the car. So this type of water card would still need gasoline. However a lot less gas would be needed and it would not have to be as refined to do its job.

There are some skeptics that say the concept of a water car is one big scam and is an impossibility. Only time will tell as there are people that believe in this process and are diligently working to produce an effective and affordable water powered vehicle.

Water cars might still a dream of the future. However, if they do come to fruition, these amazing low pollution vehicles will be the answer to high gas and oil prices. They will actually contribute to the well being of our environment.

Today however we can only rely on conservative driving to get us where we want to go. Or, better yet the foot-powered bicycle is a great option to save on gas and prevent pollution or look to public transportation and shoe leather as alternate means of transportation until the water car is ready for the market.

The affect of the Big Three is not only lessening in the domestic market, but also declining as a force in the international economic landscape. The decline in income and fruitfulness may seem equivalent a outcome of the US automotive business lagging behind as businesses, but the problem has many complex factors. The industry itself is of course partly to blame, but there are many influences that acquire led to the ongoing status of American car companies in comparison with external car companies.

Initially, the difference in car designs demonstrates the intricacy of the problems facing American car companies. In years ago when the economy was thriving, decoration matched the needs of the consumer in the present, and sometimes the ago. Domestic trends in preferences were equally near-sighted, and car companies had no requisite to promote any another kind of car besides one Americans would pay much to buy. Abroad markets, nevertheless, created a more advancing demand, and the most noticeable strength was, and still is, the use of gasoline. In European and Asian markets where gas is much pricy due to higher taxes, saving money began not at the car business but at the gas station. So, when deconstructed, the easy problem of design differences becomes a multi-faceted issue where car companies, consumers, and authorities are all responsible. The residual and influence of all Three on one another in this region is especially influential when the car companies were once biggest, supreme players in the home and international economies. So, the other factors that have led to the suffer of the Big Three are actually all part of the very problem. But, the progress of the Asian auto industry highlight the outstanding problems slowing the progress of the American automobile business.

From a business standpoint, the difference in production between Asian and American companies demonstrates one area where the US business lags behind. Foremost, work costs are one major issue that Japanese car companies acquire been able to hold through union relations. American auto workers’ unions have held impact over company executives, and as a conclusion, union demands lessen profit margins starting good on the plant floor.

Car companies are also plagued by their corporate structure. Ford initially solved a difficulty of miscommunication and uncoordinated suppliers, but they created much problems low the road. Toyota avoided problems of inefficiency and bureaucracy by creating small, effective entities for provide and manufacturing. The inflexibility of American car companies started from the suppliers upward, and higher costs were felt at every step in the manufacturing process. The belief of centralized command not exclusive drove up costs but drove low innovation, superior to designs and ideas that were too slow to react to marketplace changes.

Finally, authorities policies have slowed American innovation. Asian governments have used taxes and incentives to encourage their citizens, and the lack of these kinds of programs has led to a stagnant automobile business. In China, taxes on small, fuel-efficient cars acquire been cut in half, creating increased demand for little cars. As a conclusion, manufacturers acquire been fit to charge much for their product at a time when American car companies are slashing prices to encourage sales.

The American automobile business is lagging in the world industry, and it is a product of its complicated past. Nevertheless, since the blame is not only with the companies themselves, returning the US automotive industry to its global prominence will require an knowing of all of its influences, and a concerted try by the industry, consumers, and the government similar.

Back in the day the only accessories that you would be able to find were maybe some bumper stickers. Today there are all kinds of accessories for your car. You have everything from the outside of the car to the inside of the car and there are so many things that you can buy for your car. You have everything from neons being under the car to neons being under your seats in your car. You can put extra speakers in your car like subwoofers and amps. There is no limit to what you can do with your car and accessories.

You can even put logos across the back of your rear window to show love for your favorite sports team while you are tailgating. You can get one of those whole logos that take up the whole rear window but don’t take away your ability to see out of it. You just go to a car specialties shop to get whatever else you need.

Many people basically live in their cars so they already have many accessories but other people who just use their cars to go to and from work may not have a single thing to show. Some people that don’t have any accessories and have a long drive to work may like music. They should have some type of satellite radio or something shouldn’t they? Yes they should and nobody should have to go without customizing their own car.

You can put about just anything in the car you want as far as entertainment goes. You can put TVs, game consoles, and other things in the car. You can put DVD players in the car as well as VCRs so you can watch all of your favorite shows and movies in your car. You are not limited to what you can do with your car. You can do anything you want with your car all you need to do is buy the accessories and then start adding them to your car.

Most of the newer cars today like the ford models are coming out with satellite radios in them stock. So if you wanted something else for your car or truck you should be able to find it with ease and be able to install it as well. Many things that you can buy as accessories come with directions so that you can install your accessories yourself but on the other hand if you cannot install them yourself you can hire someone to help you.

The great thing about auto accessories in general is that you can use them anywhere as long as you are in your car and the motor is running.

Everyone would have loved to have had a TV and a DVD player in the car while their parents drove but that’s not how everyone lived. Now you can, you can put anything you want into your car and you can do it now. You don’t have to wait for anyone you can just go buy your accessories for cheap and then get them installed and start using them right away.

Preventative maintenance is important because it keeps your car running smoothly, avoiding the problems that come from a lack of care. Having your car serviced at a good foreign or domestic automotive maintenance shop is important to ensure that it gets the best care possible.

Here are some of the standard foreign and domestic automotive maintenance procedures that you should be sure to have done periodically:

Oil Changes: This is one of the most obvious, yet it is also one of the most frequently overlooked. Changing your oil and oil filter every three thousand miles keeps your engine running smoothly. Not changing your oil and oil filter often enough, on the other hand, can be disastrous: Over time, the additives in your engine oil break down, and the oil becomes thick and sludge-like. When this happens, the oil creates resistance on the engine, causing buildup and premature wear. Old engine oil can also cause the rubber seals in your engine to prematurely dry out and crack, creating leaks that can be quite expensive to fix.

There are a lot of quick-lube places that will change your oil quickly and cheaply, which may make you question the need to take your car to a good foreign or domestic automotive maintenance shop. However, it is definitely worth the extra money to make sure an experienced professional services your car. It is not uncommon for quick-lube shops to employ inexperienced teenagers at minimum wage, and horror stories (driving off without oil in the engine, finding months later that the oil plug won’t come out because it was stripped) abound.

Air Filter Replacement: Replacing the air filter is another important precaution that many people forget about. The silly thing is that this is also the easiest thing you’ll have to do on your car. Just as easy, if not easier, as filling the washer fluid on some cars. In fact, this one is so easy that you may not even have to get a foreign or domestic automotive maintenance shop to do it for you. Just make sure you get a high quality replacement filter. If you are not sure where it goes, ask. There will be a couple of clips you’ll have to undo to open the air filter box, but that’s about it.

Your air filter should be replaced once or twice a year. Every six months, you should at least check it. If it looks dirty, replace it. The better airflow your engine gets, the better it will perform, which to you means higher gas mileage and lower maintenance costs over time.

Basic Tune-Up: A tune-up basically involves replacing a bunch of inexpensive, quick-to-wear-out parts, and checking out a bunch of more expensive, slower-to-wear-out parts. This should be done once a year, but again, many people aren’t very good at making sure it gets done regularly.

A basic tune-up involves replacing (or cleaning and re-gapping) your spark plugs, replacing your distributor cap and rotor, and checking and/or replacing your spark plug wires. Other parts that might need to be replaced during a tune-up are your PCV (positive crankcase ventilation valve) and your oxygen sensor. All of these can affect the way your car runs, causing your gas mileage to go down and the carbon monoxide in your exhaust to go up.

Radiator Flush and Coolant Replacement: Your cooling system is a vital system. It prevents your engine from overheating, which can ruin an entire engine in mere minutes. Your cooling system therefore ought to be treated with respect, which means flushing your radiator and replacing the coolant every year or so, preferably at the end of summer or fall, before the cold weather hits.

The reason for flushing your radiator and replacing the coolant is that the Ph balance in antifreeze breaks down after a while, destroying many of its protective properties. Not only will it not cool to as low a temperature, but it will also begin to allow rust to form in your cooling system, which may lead to premature leaks in your radiator.

Be sure your replacement coolant is half water and half antifreeze. The 50/50 mixture has the lowest possible freezing temperature, the highest possible boiling point (meaning your coolant won’t boil on hot days), and will protect against corrosion inside the system.

Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter Replacement: Many people don’t realize that their automatic transmission contains fluid and a filter that need to be replaced periodically, just like an engine. Unfortunately, neglecting this maintenance repair can result in parts in the transmission going out more quickly than they should, requiring you to overhaul or replace your transmission, which is a costly venture, to say the least.

The fluid and filter in your automatic transmission should typically be replaced about every 25,000 miles, which is less than a year’s worth of driving for most cars. The oil in a standard transmission doesn’t need to be replaced as frequently. Replacement about once every couple of years, unless you happen to do a lot of hard driving, such as towing.

Keeping up on these five preventative maintenance repairs will ensure that you maximize the life of your car. A good foreign or domestic automotive maintenance shop can help you keep track of the required maintenance, making sure that you don’t miss anything important.

The wish for increased vehicle security may be granted in the not-so-distant future. By 2025, experts predict at least one billion vehicles will be on the road, ramping up the urgency to develop more advanced vehicular safety. Rumors of everything from foam-filled airbags capable of expanding throughout the vehicle, to talking, self-guided, Knight Rider-like coupes hitting the market abound. What is actually happening in the engineering world, though, may be even better.

The reality of vehicular technology capable of reaching the masses is that it must be cost-effective, innovative and reliable in addressing actual roadway situations. While cars with star personality are, indeed, being made, automakers and engineers are setting up a network that will allow millions of these smart autos to not only talk with us but talk with each other. By communicating at speeds far greater than human reaction time, vehicles may soon be able to coordinate their own internal systems to mitigate crashes, as well as communicate with other vehicles to avoid them altogether. Such onboard computational power makes multifaceted risk-assessment and advice possible in real-time.

One event that spiked research and standardization activity in the industry was the recent allocation of wireless spectrum for vehicle-to-vehicle safety applications. According to prominent researchers in automotive engineering, the convergence of control, communications and computations is making a dramatic impact on automotive design and development. Carmakers and governments are working together to develop cooperative, distributed safety systems that may dramatically decrease the global number of roadway injuries and deaths.

An organization to watch along with these advancements is the Transportation Active Safety Institute (TASI). Currently proposing a vehicle safety testing facility in North America dedicated to testing these new active safety systems, TASI is a not-for-profit organization. Formed by four universities and a prominent manufacturer in the industry, TASI is on a self-declared mission to encourage innovation, expand the active safety knowledge base and hasten the industry’s alignment of worldwide system architecture, performance standards and testing methodologies. Their tests and interactions with manufacturers, other universities and standards-setting organizations just may help determine future manifestations of vehicular safety.

Such unprecedented global cooperation of automotive suppliers, vehicle manufacturers, government regulatory agencies and academia is expected to increase the acceptance of active safety systems, dramatically reduce their costs, and decrease the societal and economic impact of collisions. Automotive engineers are at the forefront of these efforts, making daily advancements to ensure roadway safety is a matter of course.

Precursors of this technology are already on the road thanks to these engineers, and certain manufacturers have hundreds of patents on safety systems. Pre-crash warnings systems with forward sensors that can predict imminent crashes and communicate with other in-vehicular systems to deploy counter-measures are out there. Such systems ingeniously combine active and passive safety features to decelerate crash energy and help enhance the benefits of restraints. This not only allows the driver to react more effectively, but may reduce injuries to other parties as well. Smart cruise control, active night vision, lane departure warning, side alert and rear-view cameras are out there too, and they are also capable of being integrated with braking, throttle, steering and other systems. Imagine a cocoon of safety: object detection sensors in the side panels, a combination of front and rear cameras, a 76 GHz electronically scanning radar, pre-crash sensors, airbags and seat belts – all communicating to keep passengers as safe as possible.

Studies show buyers want to not only know their vehicles look good, get good mileage and are environmentally friendly, but also that they are equipped with advanced safety systems. Today’s vehicle market isn’t driven only by aesthetics; it’s driven by intelligent choices. Traffic accidents happen every day. Consumers know this. Satisfying them is just a matter of making sure they get what they want – and what they need – to feel safer.
